EORVS | Mixed Traffic

Since early 2013, I have voluntarilly been Editor and Designer of this Volunteer Society's quarterly Journal, Mixed Traffic, accumulating and writing articles from the 'goings-on' of the railway, before passing them to my Sub-Editor for tweaking. I then take the polished articles and supporting imagery, and compile the full Journal, which is usually 38-46 pages long at this current time. I have introduced a number of changes during my time, including direct-from-printer mailing, full cover artwork, and other general article features. Once the edition has been produced in a draft state, it is proof read and tweaked several times, before being sent off to a printer, where a printed proof is produced and assessed, before any additional tweaks are made and the final artwork is approved for distribution.

The Journal currently reaches over 500 Society members, with additional copies available for sale in the shop.

Working with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop (CS2) softwares means I am slightly limited in what I can produce at current, but have experimented and produce what has been referred to as a "top quality publication", which the society can be proud of and recognised by.

EORVS | 2016 Volunteer Recruitment Drive

Following my being co-opted onto the EORVS's Committee as Publicity Officer, I immeadiately started looking at ways to encourage new volunteers to join up, as 2015 had been a challenging time with a shortage of these.

The most recent campaign was in 2013, though some text-based posters were produced by an external source some time during 2015. My focus is very much showing off the array of volunteers we have - telling their story of involvement, what the railway has done for them as much as they have for it, and what skills they started with or learned as they got involved.

Following my first committee meeting, it was also agreed that I would produce a tri-fold leaflet that would give the necessary information for a potential volunteer to consider before joining. The images shown left are early drafts of these materials.

EOR | Gala Event Guides

The first big project of 2016 was my production of event guides to sell at the Diesel and Steam galas - and not just to design them, but to convinve the EOR to back and produce them, which they did.

Hours of research and typing on each locomotive that would be appearing at each of the galas, as well as sourcing suitable imagery and the rights to use them, each gala had a 12-page booklet produced, with a brief history of the class and number appearing at the event in question.

Personal | Merchandise

In 2016, after discussions with the retail manager at the Epping Ongar Railway, I began launching my own range of merchandise which utilised my photography skills.

I started with a run of 5 designs of Postcard, and 6 designs of Greetings Card. Also shown are a number of other stills being considered for future merchandise, including mounted prints and mugs.

Holden F5 | Publicity

I had known about The Holden F5 Steam Locomotive Trust for a few years, and was aware they were looking for ways to increase awareness of the Trust, as well as encourage more enthusiasts and steam-lovers to contribute towards the construction and eventual completion of their locomotive.

Utilising what I had learned from my time with the EORVS, I pitched some three-fold leaflets that could be placed on their publicity stands - as well as in holders at steam railways around the country - and an advertisement to be printed in some of the popular enthusiast magazines.

Work is ongoing on additional materials.
